New Delhi: As per the current income tax rules, an individual income taxpayer has to provide his Aadhaar number while filling the ITR. Apart from this, the individual taxpayer also has to link his PAN to Aadhaar. If your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar, you cannot pay tax. The notification issued on 31 March 2019 by the Central Board of Directors Tax states that it will be necessary to quote the Aadhaar number while filing ITR from 1 April 2019. It was also said in the notification that the tax return will not be filled in any way electric or manual without an Aadhaar number.
Note that in the financial year 2018-19, only Super Senior Citizens, ie citizens who are 80 years of age or above, were allowed to fill the ITR paper, while all others had to fill tax returns electronically.
In the Budget 2019, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has proposed to make PAN and Aadhaar interchangeable. This means that if a taxpayer does not have a PAN card, he can fill the ITR using Aadhaar. PAN will be required here, Aadhaar number can be used. Once the budget is passed in Parliament, these changes will be implemented from 1 September 2019.
How to quote Aadhaar number in ATR
You are provided with additional space in the form to quote ITR in Aadhaar. You have to fill the Aadhaar number there. If a person has applied for Aadhaar, he can fill the Enrollment ID of 28 digits in ITR form.
If you have previously filled the ATR and have entered your Aadhaar number in it, then you will have already filled the Aadhaar number in Part A of ITR1. In the form, you will see the Aadhaar number, in which you can also cross-check. If you fill ITR through Excel or Java, then you have to enter your Aadhaar number manually.
What to do if you have not entered the Aadhaar number in the previously filled ITR?
Quoting Aadhaar number in ITR and linking Aadhaar with PAN was announced in Budget 2017. However, due to the cases going on in the court regarding Aadhaar, the court had allowed the individual taxpayers to file the tax without Aadhaar. But the circular issued by the CBDT on 31 March 2019 clearly states that from 1 April 2019, there will be no action on the ITR filled without the initiative.
