How can I become a software developer and a noob in just 8 months? How?

Because I answered this question in six months, I feel qualified.

Here’s the scoop.

When I was 17, I was just finishing high school. I knew that I would fail my final exams. All I had was my passion and six months to get into the job market.

High school graduates typically find employment in grocery, drug, or variety stores.

My situation was different. I did not want to work in these places. I would have to work almost 10 hours per day, which isn’t enough time for me to learn the programming I love.

When I first approached someone in the field, I asked them what they would recommend I start with. They gave me a list that was as follows:

  1. HTML/CSS
  2. JavaScript
  3. PHP/MySQL
  4. Java (for Android)

This was a year ago, I had already begun c# programming language. It was too difficult for me to comprehend so I quit after 6 months.

Moving on I spent my time gathering books from IT eBooks – Free Download – Big Library

based on HTML/CSS These books were thousand pages long I had a goal to complete one book every two days with a possibility of 3 days max and so I did. Although I didn’t understand the material, everything went smoothly. I was still a beginner and could not put together a website that was appealing for my level.

I was intrigued to see what happens when a form is submitted online. I did some research and discovered that PHP was the answer. I went straight for PHP, same as usual. I read a book every 2 days. I was eventually able to connect any PHP/MySQL app without any help.

My first interview was in November 2014. This was three months after I started my studies. This interview was a failure because I am:

  • Get cocky
  • You didn’t know JS
  • Being amateur

Although I believed that reading books would get me to where I wanted to go, it didn’t. I had to practice.

After failing my first interview, I felt depressed and wanted to quit so I continued until January. (Be aware that I was writing code on paper which took me 10 minutes to respond).

January was here and my first laptop arrived. My cycle started again and I worked twice as hard in May 2015. I got my first job as software engineer.

This was not because I learned everything, but because of my desire to learn, my ambition, and my love for this area. I also had a software engineering mindset which allowed me to create a small social network site to demo for the interview.

The only way to achieve your goal is to remain passionate about the cause and not give up, no matter how frustrating.

It will be difficult at first, but it will become second nature quickly.

I am sorry for any grammar errors. If you spot them, I will update the article. I hope you found this encouragement enough, friend. Welcome to the Software World!

What should a relative noob do to prepare for the December 2013 ICPC Regionals?

Let me start by saying that we did not have an “ICPC standard” coach. As ICPC coaches for both years, we selected a professor to teach us the basics of programming concepts from a Computer Science school perspective and a Competition Programming perspective.

We self-trained mostly as individuals and as a group.

Although we did not make it to the World Finals (Rank 4, ACM ICPC Kanpur Regionals 2011, and ACM ICPC Amrita Regionals 2012. (Rank 5), we were very close. IIIT-H had a winning team at Rank 3.

Perhaps I can help you with this by writing a few words. Please contact me.

First,

practice is the most important thing if you want to be successful in these competitions. Even though you hear a lot about naturals, programmers can still use some of their codes as templates and type at night.

It is also important to remember that the regionals problem set has a balanced approach.

The set is designed to contain 4-5 simple problems that require little or no thought. As the levels get harder, the rest of the problems become more difficult.

Secondly,

ensure that you have adequate coverage in areas such as Graph Theory, DP and Basic Mathematical Concepts. You might also be able to ask a question in Network flow.

It is crucial to make sure that you, as an individual, are not the best in each area, but as a team, you must be.

Thirdly,

participate in team competitions for practice, even if you are very skilled individually.

If you are the only one who is good in a team competition and you cannot divide the work equally, you might find yourself being bottlenecked. Each team is made up of three people. Use it well.

Finally,

improve your individual programming skills. Participate in individual contests such as Topcoder (a great place for speed & accuravy), SPOJ & Codechef.

These places are good for improving your code and solving very difficult problems from previous ICPC’s.

You’d be amazed at the complexity that can pass in regional contest due to the loose limits.
There are many online judges, but I am only quoting my own experience.

Although the competition is only a day-long event, the final D-Day can bring unexpected thrills or sad disappointments. It is still important to be prepared and have some experience in competition programming.

This will help you keep your cool during the contest and help you solve the final questions beyond what the average team would do. :-).

P.S.: When we first arrived in Kanpur, we considered ourselves to be newbies. We did however go to the competition because we felt it was important to start at some point.

We came 4th and missed the World Finals by one spot. Therefore, I urge you to be prepared and give it your all. This will help you discover your strengths and address your weaknesses.
It’s as important to win i
